World Environment Day 2020

World Environment Day strives to raise awareness and encourage action for the environment. This year’s theme for World Environment Day is biodiversity.

Biodiversity is defined as “the variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat, a high level of which is usually considered to be important and desirable”. It is the foundation that supports all life on land and below water.

Biodiversity provides us with food, water, and resources, as well as services such as climate control, pollination, food mitigation, and the cycling of nutrients. One million plant and animal species are at risk of extinction, mainly due to human activities. World Environment Day is a call to action to combat the accelerating species loss and degradation of the natural world.

Here are a few small things you can do to make a change in the world:

  • Be a conscious consumer – buy local and environmentally friendly products
  • Plant some trees!
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle
  • Participate in neighborhood clean-ups
  • Reduce the use of single-use plastic items
